Saturday 23rd January – HLNC Match Report

C Team Player of the Match Goal Defence Jessica Burke

Hinckley A’s first match of the week was a rearranged match on Tuesday night against Bulkington. With a new team formation, Hinckley took a while to settle and were trailing by 3 at the end of the first quarter. Hinckley started the second quarter fighting, and fantastic defence allowed Bulkington to score only 5 goals in the second quarter to Hinckley’s 12. With the ball being brought down well from defence to attack and better form shooting from Hinckley’s shooters, Hinckley were able to pull ahead to a 31-24 lead. A final push and continued effort meant Hinckley were able to extend their lead with a final score of 40-32. Player of the match went to Goal Attack Carmen Whitaker.

Looking to carry on from where they left with Tuesdays win, the A’s were away against Nuneaton Old Eds. Hinckley knew they needed a strong start in order to beat the Nuneaton team. Despite a shaky start, Hinckley led after the first quarter 8-5. They continued to keep their composure in the second and third quarter and brought the ball down court well to extend their lead to 28-20. Incredible defence from Claire Aspinall, Alice Roche and Laura Williams allowed Old Eds to score only 2 goals in the final quarter whilst at the other end the shooters were unstoppable scoring 13 goals, ensuring another Win for Hinckley A, 41-22. Player of the Match went to Rebecca Oldfield for her never ending energy in centre court.

The Hinckley C team fought hard against top of the league opponents Coventry and North Warwickshire B to result in an unfortunate loss. With an exceptional performance from the defence, including player of the match Jessica Burke, the team worked hard to turn around possession and to continue scoring goals. The final score 26-54. With over half of the season now gone, the team continue to fight to stay in the top half of their table and to do their club proud.

Hinckley D took to the courts, confident having all 7 players back together, who as a full team are yet to lose a game. They faced Harbury B, a young side with a lot of energy who like playing long balls. A few minutes into the game though, Hinckley D found their stride and played a controlled game with fighting spirit. The Defence made numerous interceptions & turned over the attacking play to Hinckley’s advantage. In the third quarter the defence were so solid that Harbury B only scored 1 goal. Hinckley D utilised each mistake made by their opponents and the experienced side controlled the game. As soon as the ball reached the attacking circle, Hinckley had no problem scoring the goals with awesome shooting from Holly Hemsley at GA and Lynda Sanders at GS, who were jointly awarded PoM. The final score was Hinckley 58 Harbury 18.

In sub zero temperatures and fog on Wednesday night fellow club members played each other in another Club derby this time it was the E and F teams. The E team were leading 11-8 after the first quarter. The F team made some position changes. during the second andr worked hard to pull the score back within 1 goal. After half time the F’s shooters were on top form and despite great defending by the E team, they put more goals away and went ahead by 4. The F’s continued to fight for every ball taking advantage of any errors by the E’s with great defensive work, utilising rebounds in the circle to their advantage. The F’s attack fought hard throughout the game with some excellent play around the shooting circle and went on to win the match 31–28. Disappointing for the E team but a well deserved win for the Fs. Player of the match for the E’s was shared with Lucy Ibbetson at GA and Ella Wilkinson at GK and for the F team Hattie Lockley at GD.

Following on on Saturday the E team played a very frustrating game against a very physical third in the table Stockton.  Still missing two key players Hinckley’s F team replacements fitted in very well and finished the first quarter leading by 3 goals. With end to end play Stockton changed their format bringing on a new tall GS.  Despite Hinckley’s tall GK and active GD, Stockton seemed to benefit from the height advantage and brought the score back to 14 all at half time. Undeterred, Hinckley started the third quarter positively and with some great long range shots from Lucy Ibbetson and excellent interceptions from POM Bec Kenney at WD, Hinckley again took the lead. In the final quarter Stockton seemed to have the edge, but they were still neck and neck. In the final seconds of the game Stockton scored and won the match 28–27. Hinckley fought hard throughout and were unlucky to lose.

The F team’s Saturday game was a very close encounter with local rivals Griff & Coton C. The match ended in a 27 all draw with Goal Defence Nicola Coulson once again awarded Player of the match.
